Langtang: Summits of my Life III

Last updated: 30-Nov-18

By Elsa Trujillo

This is Kilian Jornet’s third incursion into the world of film in his Summits of my Life project. Shot without a script and with little footage, this 52-minute film crudely portrays the devastating effects of the April 2015 Nepal 7.8 earthquake in the Langtang valley in the Himalayas. The film portrays Jornet and Jordi Tosas’ desperate attempt to save lives in the valley after the disaster that claimed 9,000 lives in the country and where a rock and ice avalanche wiped the village of Langtang off the map.

The film won the Special Jury Mention at the prestigious Canadian BANFF Mountain Film Competition 2016. The annual competition includes over 50 films each year that deal with different mountain-related themes: extreme sports, adventure and conservation of the environment.

This is the story of one team that abandoned their objectives and devoted the expedition to helping the search and rescue operation in the Langtang valley. There are harrowing scenes as they travel up the ruins of the valley they know so well. It is now like a battle zone. The jury was impressed by the immediacy of the film. This is spur of the moment stuff; handmade, low tech, intimate footage shot with minimal planning.” Victor Saunders, jury member.

The film also won a Special Prize at the 2016 Trento Film Festival.

The film is available to watch here.
