A fantastic win for Jordi Gamito of The Elements at this year’s iconic Everest Trail Race (ETR) winds up a brilliant year for him with podium positions at UTMB, Gran Raid Isla Reunion, and Ultra Pirineu. He also becomes the first western athlete to win ETR over Nepali runners.
However, Nepal’s honour was defended in the women’s race where Purnimaya Rai came in first after dominating the competition from the highest point of the race, Pikey’s Peak, onwards.
Jordi, from Platja d’Aro in Catalonia (Spain), led from the start and went in to the final stage with an unconquerable lead. His final time was 4 hours and 22 minutes and he chose to spend the last stage running with his The Elements team mate, Manu Vilaseca from Brazil, who came in second for the women.
Sergio Arias took second in the men’s race with Joan Soler in third and Nepali runner, Pasang Sherpa, running in fourth but with a well-deserved stage victory on the last 30km day of the competition which ended in Lukla.
Third for the women was Britain’s, Becks Ferry, who had returned to run her second ETR, and behind her in fourth was fellow Brit, Louise Staples.
