Vibram Hong Kong 100 winners

By Elsa Trujillo

Chinese athlete Yun Yanqiao won the Vibram Hong Kong 100 in 9h 34m. He crossed the finish line two minutes short of the record set by Frenchman François d’Haene in 2016.

Held in Hong Kong this past weekend, the Hong Kong 100 is the first race of the 2017 Ultra-Trail World Tour. The route starts on the Sai Kung peninsula and includes steep hills, reservoirs, monkeys, beaches, great views of the city and beautiful trails. The final stretch of the race is the descent from Hong Kong’s highest peak, Tai Mo Shan.

Daniel Jung from Italy led the race for part of the way before the experienced Chinese runner, who won the race in 2013, took over and created a 26m gap from the rest of the pack. Third place was for USA runner Sage Canaday.

In the women’s race, Spanish ultra runner Nùria Picas smashed Claire Price’s 2013 record by 30min, finishing in 11h 18min. Linming Chen from China was second and Hong Kong resident Marie McNaughton from New Zealand came in third. Since this race started six years ago, only four women have finished under 12h 30m and this year all three top runners achieved this feat. Well done!
