RunUltra are excited to share the development of an exciting new Round in the Lake District, devised by Petzl.
The Lunar Round is designed to be run at night and must be completed between sunset and sunrise. It can be completed either clockwise or anti-clockwise, and must start from The Climbers Shop in Ambleside, The Lake District. Each season offers different challenges, with the weather, hours of darkness and temperature all being factors to consider.
With 2,900m ascent and approximately 40km, the Lunar Round should include the following Summits: Red Screes, Little Hart Crag, Dove Crag, Hart Crag, Fairfield, Seat Sandal,Steel Fell, Calf Crag, High Raise, Harrison Stickle, Blea Rigg, Silver Howe, Loughrigg. How you choose to summit these hills is entirely up to you and there is no path marked – this is as much a test of navigation as endurance.
The Lunar Round is a challenging prospect at anytime of the year, the option to have more or less time depending on the date adds a nice little extra!

get involved!
Plan your route and get kitted out for a night on the mountains! Please be mindful of the challenges a night in the mountains can throw at you; be confident in your navigation skills or buddy up with someone who’s more experienced. The weather can change suddenly, so check MWIS before starting. Take waterproofs and extra clothing. If you’re running alone, make sure someone at home knows where you are going.
The Lunar Round can offer different experiences depending on the time of year you choose to run it. For the faster runners, 6.5 hours will give you a fast challenge in mid-summer. You could get 15 hours in mid winter but with potentially more challenging weather conditions. Even in summer the weather is something to be wary of. Planning this Round to suit you will be as fun as running it!
To submit your round, email Petzl at [email protected]. You should include a photo of you outside The Climbers Shop at the start and the finish and you must also include your run data from your Strava, Garmin, RunKeeper, MapMyRun etc. to show start/finish and total elapsed time from leaving the shop to returning.
To celebrate the launch of The Lunar Round the first 50 submissions will receive a Petzl Buff. In addition, complete the round before midsummers day (21st June 2023) and you will be entered into a draw to win a Petzl NAO RL. The Climbers Shop are also offering a £50 voucher to the first finisher of the round!
