Freshly minted from his triumph at the CCC (101-kilometre Courmayeur, Champex-Lac, Chamonix), Hoka One One athlete Tom Evans, took some time out to talk to us at RunUltra about his preparation for, and execution of the race.
He has also got some advice for any of you out there looking to take on CCC in the future.
Tom ran a hugely clever race to come in first with a time of 10:44:32, soaring up from fourth place in the final 40 minutes. Let’s see how he did it!
Q. What was your strategy going in and did the race go as expected?
A. I approached the first half of the race sensibly and then built during the closing stages. This was tough physically and mentally especially as we had some bad weather. I wasn’t expecting Min Qi to last so long at his amazing pace, I was very happy to see and pass him at 94km!
Q. How did it feel when you knew you’d done it and you saw that iconic finish line?
A. It was amazing. A dream come true! The support from the crowd was just amazing, such a special race. I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support network behind me!
Q. Any specific training that gave you the edge?
A. I think that being really strong mentally helped in this race. I have put in a lot of hard and fast miles over the last training block with my coach Allison Benton which really helped. Also being able to train in the mountains gave me some really specific training.
Q. What’s next for you, Tom, after winning such a great race?
A. I’m planning on going to the North Face Endurance Challenge 50 in San Francisco… after some well earned rest!
Q. Finally, have you any advice for new/normal runners taking on the race?
A. Train specifically, practice your nutrition and have fun!!
Congratulations, Tom, from all of us at RunUltra – a great achievement!
